The fourth highest of Mexico's peaks, located about 80 km (50mi) west of Mexico City near the city of Toluca.


This easily accessible volcano is a great place to check out readiness for higher peaks.

 

Three different routes, three levels of difficulty

1. Hike to the crater lakes and easy climb of the peaks overlooking Laguna de la Luna
Dificulty: Beginner

2. Hike to the crater lakes and climb Pico del Fraile 4,680 m (15,354 ft) or Pico del Aguila 4,640 m (15,223 ft)
Difficulty: Advanced Beginner Client to Guide Ratio: 4:1

3. Traverse of the crater peaks including Pico del Aguila (Eagle's Peak) and Pico del Fraile (Friar's Peak)
Difficulty: Intermediate

The best time to climb is from October to April.

 

It is possible to climb throughout the rest of the year but conditions may be unfavorable making it substantially difficult or even impossible to reach the top.
